To evaluate the feasibility, animal disturbance, and census accuracy of using a small unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to survey African elephant populations.
Deployed a Gatewing ×100 UAS carrying a Ricoh GR III camera at a flight altitude of 100 m over established wildlife transects in Nazinga Game Ranch, Burkina Faso.
Conducted aerial strip sample counts across 4 transects (each overflown twice) and analyzed a dataset of over 7,000 aerial photographs.
Elephants displayed no detectable behavioral reactions to flights at 100 m, whereas smaller and medium-sized mammals could not be reliably distinguished on imagery.
A total of 34 elephants were detected across the transects, yielding an estimated population density of 2.47 elephants/km² with a coefficient of variation of 36.10%.
System autonomy was limited to 45 minutes (covering approximately 40 km of transects daily), highlighting endurance limitations relative to manned aircraft (approximately 1,000 km daily).
