THE first paper of this series [Pirie, 1931] dealt with the copperand iron- catalysed oxidation of cysteine and glutathione by hydrogen peroxide in acid solution. It was shown that the corresponding disulphides were formed. Certain differences were observed between the kinetics of the copper-catalysed and the iron-catalysed reactions and no other metal of those tried was found to catalyse this type of oxidation. In the first paper brief mention was made of the fact that this action is catalysed by thiocarbamide: the present paper will be devoted to a study of this kind of catalysis and of the similar catalysis by chemically related substances.
