ABSTRACT In this letter, an optimal observation strategy is proposed for observing space targets with spaceborne radar under the imaging‐geometry constraints. The proposed strategy accounts for the specific imaging geometries demanded by existing spaceborne radar imaging algorithms. Consequently, the constraints for optimal observation are presented involving the noise equivalent sigma zero, imaging resolution, imaging quality and available pulse repetition frequencies. Then, the fine‐resolution radar images of space targets can be acquired by optimising observation intervals and transmit‐receive sequences. The proposed strategy can support adaptive observation scheduling and radar system design. Simulation experiments have verified the validity of the proposed strategy.
