Abstract The application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology emerged in recent years and is widely used in age estimation. This review aims to highlight the advantages and need of AI in age estimation from dental radiographic data. Moreover, it also aims to assess and report the accuracy and reliability of AI in age estimation using teeth. A narrative review has been conducted by searching relevant articles of recent 3 years from 2022 to 2024 in PubMed, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE using certain keywords. The study found that with the introduction of AI technology in dental age estimation, several challenges and issues faced when using traditional dental age estimation methods are being tackled. The accuracy, precision, and efficiency of several AI models were assessed and compared. Machine learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) can be effectively used in age estimation and reliable tool for age estimation using radiographic data. DL model was considered to achieved better accuracy, precision, and efficiency in comparison to the ML algorithms. The developed AI tools can be effectively used in legal and civil cases, disaster victim identification, accidents, and many other cases.
