Although research in mass communication has included some attention to the “gatekeeper” role of the newspaperman, there have been few inquiries into the relationships between the newspaper “gatekeeper” and news sources. The author suggests a series of variables for use in such studies and draws illustrative data from studies of the press and the medical profession and the press and public school superintendents.
