In her autobiography, Simone de Beauvoir at one point looks back to a damp, dreary evening in Spring of 1940, on which she and Sartre wandered streets of Paris discussing philosophy. Sartre, briefly in Paris on leave from army, sketched out for her main lines of argument of what was to become Being and Nothingness. Their discussions over next few days, de Beauvoir tells us, centered above all on problem of the relation of situation to freedom. On this point they disagreed. Writing in 1960, she recalls:
