Survey assesses disability support services in university libraries, highlighting accessibility issues for students.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to assess the university library services in respect of users with special needs. Design/methodology/approach: The survey was conducted by administering questionnaires on library staff and users of 13 selected university libraries in West Bengal. Findings: The study reveals dissatisfactory results in terms of disability support services. Research Limitations: The scope of the present study is limited to 13 selected university libraries (out of total 17 Universities) located all over the state of West Bengal. Practical Implications: Libraries are an integral part of any academic institution, unless there is an easy access to it, the students won’t be able to completely reap the benefits of the educational system. This study will provide knowledge of making the library accessible to all. Originality/value: People living with disabilities should be included in the system design that will facilitate universal accessibility and usability. It is hoped that the recommendations of this study will form a base for the Planners and Decision Makers and the Librarians as well as the Library Authority to frame the policies and programmes on further improvement of the services in universities in West Bengal.
