Key result
Observational study evaluates AF prevalence, incidence, and predictors in patients with double-chamber pacemakers.
Why the study?
Atrial fibrillation is a frequent arrhythmia after pacemaker implantation and a risk factor for embolic events, but its frequency in pacemaker patients has not been widely studied.
Observational
In patients with double-chamber pacemakers and no prior history of atrial fibrillation, the incidence of new-onset AF is high (5.64 cases/100 person-years) and is strongly predicted by male gender, coronary artery disease, hypothyroidism, prior heart surgery, and left atrial enlargement.
High AF incidence in dual-chamber pacemaker patients may warrant closer monitoring; leaves open whether predictor-based interventions alter outcomes.
Background: Current pacemakers allow for the continuous recording of the occurrence of arrhythmic events. One of the most frequent arrhythmias after implantation of a device is atrial fibrillation (AF), an important risk factor for embolic events. The frequency of this arrhythmia in pacemaker patients has not been widely studied. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, and predictors of the occurrence of AF in patients with double-chamber pacemakers and without a history of atrial fibrillation prior to [...]

Costa et al. (2022) conducted an observational in Pacemaker patients without prior atrial fibrillation. Double-chamber pacemakers was evaluated on Prevalence, incidence, and predictors of atrial fibrillation. The prevalence, incidence, and predictors of atrial fibrillation were evaluated in patients with double-chamber pacemakers, though quantitative results are not available in the truncated abstract.
