Control photographs taken prior to fluorescein injection with filters in place show bright images with superficial drusen of the disc. This is partially reflected light and partially true autofluorescence. Histologically, the autofluorescence of drusen of the optic disc can be demonstrated under the fluorescent microscope with filters comparable with those used clinically. As techniques of fluorescent anglography evolve, the widespread phenomenon of autofluorescence may become more important.
