Key result
Surgical resection of right atrial myxoma causing right-to-left PFO shunting yields successful 3-month recovery.
Why the study?
Right atrial myxoma extending to the inferior vena cava with right-to-left shunting causing systemic desaturation is exceedingly rare, with no more than five cases previously reported.
Population
A 45-year-old female with a right atrial myxoma and systemic desaturation
Design
Case report
Follow-up

Highlights a rare presentation of right atrial myxoma causing systemic desaturation due to right-to-left shunting across a patent foramen ovale, successfully treated with surgical resection and PFO closure.
Saha et al. (2021) conducted a case report in Right atrial myxoma (n=1). Surgical resection and primary closure of patent foramen ovale was evaluated. Surgical resection of a rare right atrial myxoma causing right-to-left shunting via a patent foramen ovale resulted in an uneventful recovery and the patient doing well at 3 months.
