Key result
Occult hemodialysis catheter injury leads to ~300 mL hemopericardium and PEA arrest without visible perforation.
Why the study?
Occult hemodialysis catheter-related cardiac injury without visible perforation is an under-recognized cause of hemopericardium, peri-dialysis hemodynamic collapse, and cardiac arrest.
Population
A 23-year-old female with ESRD

May prompt consideration of occult catheter injury in unexplained peri-dialysis collapse; hypothesis-generating for prospective validation.
Case Report (n=1)
This case highlights occult hemodialysis catheter-related cardiac injury as a rare but life-threatening cause of hemopericardium and peri-dialysis hemodynamic collapse, emphasizing the critical role of rapid POCUS assessment.
Goonesinghe et al. (2026) conducted a case report in End-stage renal disease (ESRD) with occult hemodialysis catheter-related cardiac injury (n=1). Subxiphoid pericardial window and permcath exchange was evaluated. Occult hemodialysis catheter injury without visible perforation caused hemopericardium (300 mL) and pulseless electrical activity arrest in a 23-year-old female with ESRD.
