Adolescent footballer exercise echo shows LV circumferential strain increases at higher workloads while longitudinal strain plateaus.
Why the study?
Few data exist describing LV myocardial mechanics and reserve during dynamic exercise in adolescent athletes.
Observational (n=42)
p-value: p=<0.05
In elite adolescent footballers, LV circumferential strain increases throughout exercise up to 150 W as the dominant mechanism of contractility increase, whereas longitudinal strain plateaus early.

May indicate circumferential dominance during exertional LV contractility in adolescent athletes; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.
Pieles et al. (2020) conducted an observational in Healthy elite adolescent athletes (n=42). Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise echocardiography was evaluated on LV myocardial deformation (longitudinal and circumferential 2-D strain) during incremental exercise (p=<0.05). Exercise echocardiography in adolescent footballers revealed that LV circumferential strain significantly increased up to 150 W (P<0.05), whereas longitudinal strain plateaued at 50 W.
