Adjunctive Mexidol improves quality of life, exercise tolerance, and lowers NT-proBNP in CCI and CHF.
Why the study?
The study evaluated the effects of sequential intravenous and oral Mexidol on myocardial function, NT-proBNP, exercise tolerance, quality of life, oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction in patients with chronic cerebral ischemia and NYHA II-III chronic heart failure receiving standard therapy.
Does Mexidol improve functional status, quality of life, and biomarkers in patients with chronic cerebral ischemia and chronic heart failure with reduced LVEF?
Does Mexidol improve functional status, quality of life, and biomarkers in patients with chronic cerebral ischemia and chronic heart failure with reduced LVEF?
Adding Mexidol to standard therapy in patients with chronic heart failure and cerebral ischemia improves functional status, quality of life, and reduces biomarkers of stress and inflammation.

Mexidol may improve functional status in CCI with CHF; hypothesis-generating from small cohort and should not yet change practice.

Толкачева et al. (2021) studied Chronic cerebral ischemia and chronic heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (n=44). Mexidol vs. Standard basic therapy was evaluated on Quality of life, functional status, and NT-proBNP levels. Mexidol added to standard therapy significantly improved quality of life, exercise tolerance, and reduced NT-proBNP compared to standard therapy alone in 44 patients with CCI and CHF.
