Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of liquid Ge are presented, based on pseudopotential-derived interatomic forces, molecular dynamics simulations of the atomic structure, and linearized-muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) supercell calculations for the electronic structure. The electronic structure of liquid Ge is found to be far from a free-electron model and far from any of the crystalline (semiconducting or metallic) phases. We find good agreement with recent photoemission measurements.
