Key result
Obesity linked to ~156% higher incident AF risk versus normal BMI alongside poor physical activity.
Why the study?
Does physical activity attenuate the risk of incident atrial fibrillation associated with obesity and weight change in middle-aged adults?
Cohort (n=14,219)
Yes
Does physical activity attenuate the risk of incident atrial fibrillation associated with obesity and weight change in middle-aged adults?
p-value: p=0.04
Physical activity provides a small protective effect against incident atrial fibrillation and partially attenuates the risk associated with obesity in men, but not women.

Physical activity may partially attenuate obesity-related AF risk in men; leaves open causal effects and extension to women.
Huxley et al. (2014) conducted a cohort in Atrial Fibrillation (n=14,219). Physical activity, body mass index, waist circumference, and weight change vs. Normal body mass index and poor physical activity was evaluated on Incident atrial fibrillation (p=0.04). Compared with normal BMI men, incident AF risk in obese men with ideal, intermediate, and poor physical activity increased by 37%, 129%, and 156%, respectively (Pinteraction=0.04).
