Randomized trial demonstrates effective crack propagation prediction in mechanical components, suggesting model reliability.
The aim of this work is the validation of a numerical model based on the XFEM method for the prediction of crack propagation in mechanical components subjected to cyclic loads. Through careful bibliographic research, it was decided to take as a case study the analysis of the propagation of a crack passing through a panel in an additive material. Using the experimental data present in the literature, it was possible to set up a numerical model as detailed as possible that can best simulate material damage through Continuum Damage Modelling (CDM) linked to the simulation of crack propagation through the XFEM Method. In addition to this model, a second model is set up for the calculation of the Stress Intensity Factor during crack propagation. The results obtained show an excellent experimental numerical correlation that highlights the reliability of the model and its effectiveness in the design field, suggesting further development using more complex material models.
