The study finds that workforce instability negatively affects healthcare quality in India, suggesting a need for financial strategies to improve retention.
Workforce InstabIlIty a s a central fInancIal VulnerabIlItyInstability in the workforce is perhaps the most chronic and disruptive of several drivers that are contributing to financial distress in the Indian healthcare sector.Because of chronic shortages, particularly in the areas of nursing, technical, and allied health staff in critical care, emergency medicine, and anesthesia, there has been no choice but to resort to contractual or agency staffing. This is much more costly than regular staffing and is also linked to decreased continuity of care and staff engagement. 3n fact, studies from India and international systematic reviews have shown that instability in the workforce is linked to decreased quality outcomes, increased operational costs, and burnout of staff. However, workforce issues are frequently viewed as short-term operational challenges rather than financial risks at the enterprise level.Investments in workforce retention, such as fair remuneration, predictable career pathways, skill development, and safer working conditions, should be recognized as financially protective strategies rather than discretionary expenditures.
