Photographic survey documents historical buildings, indicating significant architectural features and alterations.
The photographic survey was carried out to Historic England Level 1 survey guidelines (Historic England 2016) and based upon architect plans that have been provided by the client. Both the Hornby and Barbon buildings were built around 1871 as part of the Cardwell Reforms and provided domestic accommodation for married soldiers and their families from the King's Own Regiment. The barracks was closed in 1959 and the site repurposed as an educational facility, but the buildings appear to have undergone only limited external alteration and retain much of their character. The interiors, however, have been extensively altered with the application of modern finishes throughout and insertion of later partitions, leaving only traces of the earlier decorative scheme and a modified layout. It is anticipated that the watching brief phase will provide more detail on the original layout and perhaps further features associated with the earlier décor.
