Watching brief investigates former water mains in university area, revealing limited findings.
The attending project archaeologist was to maintain a watching brief during the excavation of three proposed test pit locations, to be excavated within the area of former tennis courts associated with the University Campus, in order to investigate the line of a former water mains service and establish the location and depth of the service. The results of the excavation were very limited, as only one of three proposed trial holes were excavated. This was excavated solely through the backfill of the service trench for the water main and was found to be devoid of archaeological material, either within the backfill deposits of the original trench, or visible within the exposed sections of the current works.
