This report details the results of an archaeological watching brief carried out by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) in the grounds of the Ram Jam Inn, A1 Northbound, Stretton, Rutland, LE15,7QX. The work was undertaken between 29th September - 13th October 2023 on behalf of Godwin Developments in advance of the construction of a new drive through development. An area, 25m x 18m on the western edge of site was stripped down to the natural substrata for the purposes of archaeological investigation. Further deep excavation was undertaken in the central area with a 10 x 20m footprint dug to a depth of 3m. The area of ground reduction and basement foundations excavated were negative for archaeological features and in general this confirms the results of the DBA. The site conforms still to boundaries seen in the 1970 OS map. After the Oct 13th visit it was felt that further monitoring visits would be superfluous. It was not possible to inspect the architectural stonework retained for re-inclusion into the development, in particular HER record MLE5324 which is a possible medieval sundial. 'This is listed as: a simple stone sundial found in 1926 during alterations to the inn. It is now built into its front wall', (Hyam 2019) as this had apparently been moved offsite before monitoring works began.
Andrew McLeish (Sun,) studied this question.
