Demonstrates ambipolar behavior in organic thin-film transistors, suggesting efficient logic circuit design.
Organic semiconductors are considered as promising candidates for next‐generation electronics due to their flexibility, lightweight nature, tunable electronic properties, low fabrication costs, and biocompatibility. Ambipolar devices, capable of transporting both holes and electrons, are particularly attractive for simplified circuit design. In this study, organic thin‐film transistors (OTFTs) and logic inverters are fabricated using the non‐fullerene acceptor (NFA) IEICO‐4F. The narrow bandgap and well‐aligned frontier orbitals of IEICO‐4F enable efficient dual charge transport, resulting in intrinsic ambipolar behavior within a single material system. Balanced electrical gains for both p‐type and n‐type operation are achieved through octadecylphosphonic acid self‐assembled monolayer treatment, mobility (µ) evaluation and channel width ( W ) optimization. NAND and NOR logic gates are successfully implemented, confirming device reliability and suitability for integration. This single‐component strategy eliminates the need for complementary semiconductor pairs, streamlining fabrication and enhancing scalability. These findings establish IEICO‐4F as a promising ambipolar semiconductor for low‐cost, flexible, and scalable organic electronic applications.
