Randomized trial evaluates blood parameters during acute and chronic histomonosis in turkeys, suggesting potential severity indicators.
The study aimed to evaluate morphological blood parameters in turkeys with acute (50-day-old) and chronic (120-day-old) histomonosis (n=16). In the acute course, a decrease in hemoglobin (–2.6%) and erythrocytes (3.0%) was observed, accompanied by pronounced leukocytosis (+24.5%). The leukogram revealed an increase in eosinophils (+23.8%) and band neutrophils (+105.3%), indicating a left shift. The leukocyte intoxication index (LII) increased to 0.93 (+52.5%). In the chronic course, more pronounced anemia was detected, with hemoglobin decreasing by 15.8% and erythrocytes by 7.6%. Leukocytosis was less marked (+13.0%), but eosinophilia (+50%) and a decrease in segmented neutrophils (–9.7%) were recorded. LII reached 0.79 (+25.4%). The results indicate that morphological blood parameters are informative markers for assessing the severity and stage of histomonosis in turkeys.
