Assesses vanadium crossover reduction in redox flow batteries, suggesting enhanced electrochemical performance.
In this work, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent–organic frameworks (COFs), and porous organic polymers (POPs) were integrated with sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) to examine the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) performances. XRD patterns revealed the crystalline nature of the MOF and COF when compared to the SPEEK polymer. The presence of organic frameworks in integrated SPEEK membranes was confirmed by thermal, functional, elemental, and morphological properties, which indicated a significant improvement in material performance. The study of chemical stability revealed minimal weight loss across all membranes with SPEEK/POP showing the least degradation. SPEEK/COF was performed with low vanadium crossover (6.97 × 10–7 cm2·min–1), excellent Coulombic efficiency (99.27%), and energy efficiency (88.17%) in single-cell VRFB testing. Organic frameworks enhance ion selectivity and regulate proton transport, thereby improving the overall electrochemical performance. SPEEK-based composite membranes with these frameworks exhibit high stability and durability, making them suitable for next-generation VRFBs.
