Archaeological watching brief monitors geotechnical works, revealing minimal archaeological potential.
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd was appointed by CgMs Heritage to undertake an archaeological watching brief during geotechnical works at 23 Medina Avenue, Newport, Isle of Wight. This report concerns the results of the watching brief, which comprised monitoring six bore holes and two test pits on the 15th and 16th April 2019. The ground investigations appear to suggest natural or possibly re-deposited natural orange-brown clay, silt and gravel lies directly beneath modern or existing surfacing at the locations of boreholes 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6. The upper-most of these deposits contain post-medieval or modern glass. The starter pit for borehole 2 and the two test pits appear to indicate localised made ground containing modern building materials. Taken together with the stepped profile of the Site falling from the Medina Avenue frontage, the starter pits and test pits appear to suggest the Site has been heavily disturbed and levels reduced in the modern era. This appears to be corroborated by the geotechnical logs for the boreholes and test pits. It is concluded the investigations and observations suggest the site retains little or no archaeological potential.
