Narrative review explores chemoresistance mechanisms in OSCC, highlighting cancer stem cells' role in treatment failures.
Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity worldwide, characterized by high rates of treatment resistance and recurrence. Chemoresistance is a significant barrier to effective OSCC management, often attributed to the presence and behavior of Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs). These specialized cells possess self-renewal, differentiation, and survival mechanisms that contribute to their resilience against conventional therapies. This narrative review explores the molecular mechanisms underlying CSC-mediated chemoresistance in OSCC, including pathways like PI3K/AKT, Wnt/β-catenin, and Notch signaling. Emerging strategies targeting CSCs and overcoming chemoresistance are also discussed, offering insights into future therapeutic approaches.
