Overview

Cognitive training merits consideration for healthy older adults; extends RCT evidence favoring it over mild aerobic exercise alone.

Structured PICO

Does cognitive training, mild aerobic training, or their combination improve cognitive performance in healthy older adults?

P
Population
122 healthy older adults (mean age 76.8, 69% female) residing at a retirement community in Lenexa, KS. Inclusion: MMSE ≥24, corrected vision ≥20/40. Exclusion: stroke or heart attack in past 5 years, taking drugs affecting cognition.
I
Intervention
Cognitive training (CogniFit, 48 forty-minute sessions over 16 weeks), mild aerobic training (Fitness Forever Senior Exercise Video, three 45-min sessions weekly for 16 weeks), or combined cognitive and physical training.
C
Comparator
Book-reading control group (read 'Active Living Everyday', assigned excerpts and one 60-minute weekly meeting for 16 weeks).
O
Outcome
Cognitive performance measured by the CogniFit neuropsychological evaluation (15 tasks measuring 17 cognitive abilities) at 16 weeks.surrogate

Cognitive training, but not mild aerobic training, significantly improves specific cognitive domains in healthy older adults.
