The contemporary commemorative landscape of the United States is dense with Confederate memorials. Although the national tolerance for these monuments that honor sedition, rebellion, treason, and white supremacy has wanedin some communities, there is still widespread misunderstandings about their origins and intended meaning. This article tracesthe evolution of the commemoration of the Confederacy, the importance of white supremacy to the tradition, and the obstaclesthat impede the revision of this inherited landscape.
