The present paper is a comparative study intended to highlight the different types of approaches to translation practices according to two main criteria: the type of the text (general/literary versus specialized/technical and the translator's professional formation. One of the hypotheses of the study is that, when faced with the task of translating two different text types, engineering students have a preference for technical texts and achieve better overall performance when translation this type of texts compared to the task of literary translation. Similarly, students specializing in humanities (modern languages, applied modern languages) will prefer and do better when translating literary/general texts. The paper presents the results of an experiment involving students from the Faculty of Engineering and Letters and the interpretation of the results will show the different patterns of approaching translations.
