This report on the marriage records in New Haven, Connecticut, from 1870 through 1950 shows that the "triple-melting-pot" type of assimilation is occurring through intermarriage, with Catholicism, Protestantism, and Judaism serving as the three fundamental bulwarks. Protestant British-Americans, Germans, and Scandinavians intermarry; Catholic Irish, Italians, and Poles form a separate intermarrying group; while Jews remain almost completely endogamous. Except for remarriages among Catholics, religious ceremonies sanctioned as many, and in some instances more, of the marriages, whether endogamous or exogamous, in 1950 as in 1940.
