When plasma is injected perpendicular to magnetic lines of force, part of the plasma blob is captured and spread along the lines of force. The results obtained make it possible to identify the mechanism which brings about the escape of plasma along the magnetic field. In the range of densities of the moving plasma (3 × 1011-2 × 1014 cm-3) and magnetic field strengths (0-2 kG) considered here, this mechanism is the electrostatic repulsion of the polarization space charge formed by the interaction of the plasma with the transverse magnetic field. The optimum values of the injected plasma density and the transverse magnetic field strength are established for which maximum capture occurs; this is of some practical interest in the filling of closed magnetic traps by the external-injection method.
