STUDENTS OF THE professions have found the concept of intra-occupational prestige useful as a tool for describing and analyzing professional life. Though the label itself is not commonly used, the idea is. Medical practices can be differentiated according to practitioners' ranking of specialties, and hospitals can be ranked on a vertical dimension. A combination of the two is a good indicator of colleague regard for a practitioner and his place in the local medical community.2 Lawyers are also differentiated by kind of practice and the reputation of their firm.3 And, finally, academicians can be ranked according to the prestige of the institution employing them and of the institution where they took their advanced degrees.4
