Type 2 diabetes drives sex-specific neurovascular transcriptomic changes, triggering greater responses in female endothelial cells.
Murine study uncovers sex-specific transcriptomic responses to type 2 diabetes in the hippocampal neurovascular unit, highlighting greater endothelial inflammation in females.
murine model, we report sex-specific and cell type-specific neurovascular unit responses to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Sex specificity predominated in endothelial cells, characterized by a greater response in females, including altered expression of genes involved in the NF-κB inflammatory pathway. A few T2DM-induced transcriptomic responses were common to all cell types and both sexes, including differential gene expression regulating altered blood-brain-barrier permeability.

Nuthikattu et al. (2025) studied Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was evaluated on Transcriptomic response in the single-nuclei hippocampal neurovascular unit. Type 2 diabetes mellitus induced sex-specific and cell type-specific transcriptomic responses in the murine hippocampal neurovascular unit, with a greater response in female endothelial cells.
