Population

43 patients (mean age 59 +/- 10 years) presenting with 50 symptomatic radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF) areas involving the skin and underlying tissues, previously treated with radiotherapy for head and neck or breast cancer.

Intervention

Pentoxifylline (800 mg/d) and tocopherol (Vit E) (1,000 IU/d) administered orally for at least 6 months.

Outcome

Clinical regression and functional improvement measured by RIF surface area and Subjective Objective Medical management and Analytic (SOMA) injury evaluation score.surrogate

Combined pentoxifylline and tocopherol significantly reversed chronic radiation-induced fibrosis in patients with prior radiotherapy for head and neck or breast cancer.
