Investigation reports new occurrences of tropical gastropods in Amakusa, highlighting environmental changes.
The occurrence of three conspicuous tropical intertidal gastropods (Planaxis sulcatus, Echinolittorina cecillei and Nerita plicata) was investigated around the Amakusa Shimoshima Island, southwestern Japan. All three species were found at multiple rocky-shore sites, while none had been recorded in a comprehensive survey conducted in the 1960s. In addition, one individual of Nerita insculpta was recorded, representing one of the first records of this species in Amakusa region. These findings may be indicative of environmental change on the local biota of the Amakusa region.
