A STUDY of 400 sailors admitted to Royal Naval Detention Quarters was made. Of these 247 were found to be tattooed. Studies of the tattooed group showed a correlation with personality disorder which increased in significance with the number of tattoos possessed. Attitude to tattoos was investigated and this was found to be related to socio-economic background, personality disorder, marital status, and site of tattoo. The design of the tattoo itself held no significance.
