Exercise and sports safely provide CV and mental health benefits for risk-stratified children with cardiomyopathy.
Why the study?
Despite the cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health benefits of exercise, children with cardiomyopathy have traditionally been restricted from engaging in exercise or participating in organized sports.
Does exercise and sports participation provide safe health benefits in children with cardiomyopathy?
Does exercise and sports participation provide safe health benefits in children with cardiomyopathy?
This review highlights that current evidence supports promoting exercise and sports participation in children with cardiomyopathy after appropriate risk stratification.
Supports risk-stratified exercise counseling in pediatric cardiomyopathy; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective confirmation before practice change.
Purpose of review There are numerous health benefits to exercise, including improved cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health. Despite these many benefits, children with cardiomyopathy have been traditionally restricted from engaging in exercise or participating in organized sports. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current literature regarding the utility of cardiopulmonary exercise testing, discuss the safety and benefits of exercise and sports participation in children with cardiomyopathy, and to identify research gaps in the field. Recent findings We highlight relevant literature discussing exercise and sports participation in children with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy, and those with ventricular assist device support. We discuss recent literature describing methods for risk stratification. Summary The current literature globally favors promoting exercise and sports participation after appropriate risk stratification. Additionally, we offer guidance for how to safely promote exercise in children with cardiomyopathy.

Masood et al. (2023) conducted a review in Cardiomyopathy in children. Exercise and sports participation was evaluated. Exercise and sports participation are generally safe and offer cardiovascular and mental health benefits for most children with cardiomyopathy after appropriate risk stratification.
