To examine whether desires, behavioral self-predictions, and perceived control predict employee attendance at a training session using the theory of reasoned action framework.
Evaluated employee attendance at a training session based on the theory of reasoned action.
Measured distinct constructs including desires ('I want'), behavioral self-predictions ('I will'), perceived control, attitudes, subjective norms, and underlying behavioral and normative beliefs.
Motivation to attend the training session was accurately predicted by attitudes and subjective norms (R = .76, p < .001), which were directly derived from behavioral and normative beliefs.
Actual attendance was best predicted by an employee's desire or motivation to attend and the degree of perceived pressure from their supervisor.
Perceived control did not enhance the prediction of desire to attend, and neither perceived control nor behavioral self-predictions improved the prediction of actual attendance.
