Abstract In the months ahead, the new administration will have to begin discovering and undoing the worst machinations of the Bush years. None of that will be possible until the reflexive, even obsessive opacity of the previous administration is reversed and more transparent government restored. It is clear that the new president will also have to restore not just the broken economy, but the confidence of the nation. He will have to give the country its optimism back.
