The author examines key shifts in leadership practices, highlighting implications for future leaders.
The author is a retired Army Brigadier General, who led the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at West Point from 2000 to 2012. In discussing the changes in leadership development during the thirty years of publication of Leader to Leader , he describes four changes of significance, which in his words are Coaching as Leader Development, Leadership Style versus Leader Adaptability, Courage in Leadership, and Continuance of Values‐Based Leadership. For instance, within point one, he writes that “the growth of coaching has been staggering. The certified ICF coaches exceed 50,000 in more than 140 countries, and that's just one coach training company. Virtually all CEOs have a coach or coaches at some point.” Within courage, he pays tributes to two pioneers: in management, Mary Parker Follett (1868–1933), whom he says had an impact on Leader to Leader founder Frances Hesselbein; and Robert K. Greenleaf, born in 1904, “often viewed as the originating thought leader of servant leadership,” whose contributions also reflect Follett's influence.
