Celebrating timeless leadership principles, this overview highlights key themes and influential authors.
The author has been managing editor of Leader to Leader for 15 years, half the existence of the publication. He observes that despite the changes in the world during the last 30 years, “many of the principles of leadership remain timeless and evergreen.” Fifteen of these themes are identified, with one article each as an example, and links are provided to those articles. The themes are: Character and Integrity; Communication; Creative and Critical Thinking; Curiosity; Emotional Intelligence; Future Orientation; Leadership Development; Lifelong Learning; Listening; Meaning and Purpose; Mindfulness; Psychological Safety; Questing; Trust; and Wellbeing and Self‐Care. Many of the authors of the articles are considered important and foundational leaders in their fields, such as Daniel Goleman and Cary Cherniss in Emotional Intelligence, and Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner in Future Orientation. And Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School, brought Psychological Safety to a wider, worldwide audience with her 2018 book The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth .
