This article describes a membrane filter technique for the concentration and enumeration of iron bacteria in water supplies. The filtration procedure is exceptionally successful in concentrating small numbers of organisms. This process permits a relatively accurate enumeration. An additional advantage of the filter technique is the detection of other foreign material in the sample that is not apparent by ordinary bacteriological or chemical analysis.
