Microgrid consists of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Loads. Microgrid in the islanded mode of operation becomes completely independent concerning grid and total control move on to the DERs. This peculiar behavior of the microgrid can exploit for the protection in the case of islanded mode. During the transition from unbalanced to a balanced condition, the small windows available can be utilized with the utmost care to protect the microgrid. In this paper, off-nominal frequency injection and sequence components are used to detect and eliminate the fault. A small timeframe is used, which offers the best possible window for the detection of the fault. The study is done on the system in health as well as in faulty condition. The inception of fault is accompanied by the impedance change, thus offering the trigger point for the beginning of protection and control strategies in the Islanded microgrid system.
