CNNs improve model performance for reconstructing vectorcardiograms from 12-lead ECGs over conventional MLP methods.
Why the study?
Measuring VCG requires a different lead system that complicates monitoring devices, prompting methods to reconstruct VCG from ubiquitous standard 12-lead ECG.
Does a convolutional neural network improve the reconstruction of vectorcardiography from standard 12-lead ECG compared to conventional methods?
Does a convolutional neural network improve the reconstruction of vectorcardiography from standard 12-lead ECG compared to conventional methods?
A convolutional neural network approach significantly improves the accuracy of reconstructing vectorcardiograms from standard 12-lead ECGs, potentially enhancing spatial diagnostic capabilities without requiring specialized lead systems.
Vectorcardiography (VCG) is an alternative method of electrocardiography which provides useful spatial information for the cardiologists to diagnose and localise cardio-vascular diseases with higher accuracy. However, the method of measuring the VCG requires a different lead system which makes the monitoring devices more complicated. Thus, the method of reconstructing VCG from standard 12-lead ECG, which is more ubiquitous, was developed in past years. In this paper, we proposed a novel method of reconstructing VCG from standard 12-lead ECG by using convolutional neural network (CNN) which adds temporal information to the training process. The result indicates that adding convolutional layer before feeding into fully-connected MLP layers improves the performance of model significantly from the conventional methods.

Tearwattanarattikal et al. (2023) studied Cardio-vascular diseases. Convolutional neural network (CNN) for VCG reconstruction vs. Conventional methods (fully-connected MLP layers) was evaluated on Model performance. Reconstructing vectorcardiograms from standard 12-lead ECGs using a convolutional neural network significantly improved model performance compared to conventional fully-connected MLP methods.
