This research highlights the impact of schistosomiasis on women and girls, indicating the urgent need for targeted interventions.
Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by parasites of the genus Schistosoma. More than 140 million individuals are infected with one of three primary Schistosoma spp, Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma haematobium, and Schistosoma japonicum. The most common early sign of schistosomiasis is rash or itchy skin. Without treatment, schistosomiasis can become chronic and increase the risk of liver or bladder fibrosis and bladder or kidney cancer. The current available treatment for all Schistosoma species is praziquantel, which can kill adult worms and reduce morbidity.
