Heritage assessment evaluates significance of Hawkslee Barn, indicating potential residential conversion impacts.
TJC Heritage Ltd. was commissioned to produce a heritage statement for Hawkslee Barn, Bosley, to assess the significance of the site and potential impacts of proposed conversion to a residential dwelling. The assessment included desk-based and archival research, a buildings appraisal, a statement of heritage significance, and heritage impact assessment. Hawklsee Barn is a multi-phase agricultural building with origins in the early to mid-19th century and historically associated with the farmstead on the east side of Minn-End-Lane. The original function of the buildings is difficult to interpret due to later alterations, but they possibly included a cow house with hayloft over, and a barn. Between 1896-1907 an extension was added and the building reconfigured to accommodate a milking parlour, with the adoption of concrete stalls and flooring, in line with ongoing developments in dairying practice and regulation. The building is considered to be of low significance on account of its architectural, archaeological, and historical interest as a much-altered example of agricultural buildings relating to upland dairying. The site is considered to make a positive contribution to the significance of Hawkslee House (NHLE: 1138884) although its poor condition is a detracting factor.
