Detailed archaeological survey identifies historical remains in Wragby, indicating past human activity.
Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned by Heatons Planning Ltd and Beckby Biogas Ltd to undertake a detailed archaeological survey comprising high-resolution LiDAR and Multispectral survey, and geochemical and magnetic susceptibility survey on land adjacent to the B1202 Wragby Road in Lincolnshire. The surveys were undertaken as pre-application works ahead of a proposed development for an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility with office, access, and associated infrastructure. The combined survey results identified cropmarks and extant earthworks across the site indicating the presence of archaeological remains. A long continuous regular bank with subtle surface expression was identified running across the north of the site and is thought to be the remains of a Roman Road, on the same course as the road indicated in the DBA for the site. The feature is visible in aerial imagery, LiDAR data and multispectral data. The geochemical survey results further indicates archaeological activity across parts of the site and in immediately adjacent areas to the north and west. Former medieval field boundaries and historic ridge and furrow cultivation systems were also identified across the site through aerial imagery and multispectral data, painting a picture of a medieval agricultural landscape lost to years of subsequent agricultural ploughing. In the south of the site along the proposed access road, circular anomalies suggesting the presence of archaeological enclosures were identified, which correlate with a record in the Historic Environment Record for cropmarks of an uncertain date.
