Evaluation identifies Neolithic artefacts in Balmedie, suggesting potential archaeological significance.
Cameron Archaeology carried out a 5% archaeological evaluation of land south of Chapelwell, Balmedie 23-27 January 2023. No archaeological features were identified but total of 17 lithics were recovered from the topsoil: the presence of diagnostic Middle/Late Neolithic artefacts suggests that the investigated field may be the location of a potentially unmixed site from this period. Knapping waste and waste cores indicate the presence of a domestic settlement, whereas the heavily burnt blade fragment SF 3 indicates the possible presence of one or more cremation burials. It is quite possible that the soils of this field may contain a substantial Middle/Late Neolithic assemblage.
