Historic record documents the evolution of buildings in West Bar, highlighting their industrial significance.
Historic Building Record Within the site are a range of buildings dating from the ea rly 1 8 th century to the late 20 th century, forming five distinct areas of development, comprising: t he Times Works and adjacent housing (Building 2; later redeveloped to form the Anchor Works), Love Street Steel Works ( Building 3 ; later redeveloped to form Century Drill Works ); Pattinson Bros Ltd Engineers (Building 4; later Egginton Bros); Bridge Street Works (Buildings 5, 9 & 10; Marsden Brothers & Co and later partly redeveloped and divided betwe en Woollens & Co., Charles Churchill & Co, Ltd and assorted offices); and the Soho Grinding Wheel (Building 12; later Eclipse Lantern Works). Together the assorted buildings provide a cross-section through the character of development that typified the West Bar area, from its initial mixture of high -density housing, large, planned works and smaller industrial concerns; changing to fewer, larger works as the more successful endeavours acquired and redeveloped adjoining works and housing; and the latter repurposing and redevelopment of buildings to accommodate modern uses before their ultimate decline.
