Galileo as a Critic of the Arts. Drawing on encyclopaedic knowledge, Panofsky makes connections between the most varied areas of Renaissance culture, based on the homology between Galileo's aesthetic tastes and his scientific dispositions. Both derive from the same «critical purism» which explains both his ignorance of Kepler's discoveries on the elliptical orbits of the planets and his stated preference for painting as opposed to sculpture. Thus, disregarding all academic demarcations, an art historian offers an aesthetic answer to an epistemological question.
