The ascension of economists as a governing elite in Brazil In this text we attempt to analyze how economists, who occupy high places in government organisms, have used their specific properties to implement the ambitions of power that have always characterized Brazilian intellectuals. The presence of economists within the governing elites and the preeminence of economics in the hierarchy of academic disciplines stem from a collective drive on the part of groups and various institutions, over the last few decades, within university and government milieus. That is why we believe that we must not be content with the analysis of economic thinking, but that we need also to go on to study the social milieu of economists, of their groups, institutions and debates. The present study covers the period from the 1930s to the 60s, during which the field of economists was being constituted.
